What are the most energy efficient window treatments?

Did you know that a great deal of heat can escape from your home through the windows? One of the ways to prevent this, according to New Zealand's Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA), is to use and install the right curtains and blinds.

Let's find out how you can make your home feel more cosy with our range of curtains, shutters and blinds.

Use curtains correctly to prevent heat escaping

Drapes are no substitute for quality double glazing, but they can certainly make a big difference to the efficiency of your indoor heating. According to the EECA, properly-installed curtains reduce heat loss through single glazed windows by up to 60 per cent and through double glazed windows by up to 50 per cent.

The best products to use are curtains with an acrylic coating painted on the back of the curtain fabric, which serves as an additional insulating layer. Our range of readymade thermal curtains and blackout curtains are ideal.

If you don't quite have the budget to buy brand new drapes, you can affix detachable curtain linings to the back of your existing pencil pleat curtains for the same insulating effect.

An important thing to bear in mind is that curtains need to be installed correctly to achieve maximum energy efficiency. Consult our How to Measure for Curtains guide for expert tips.

Install custom-made shutters to keep the warmth inside

With the right window treatments, you won't even notice it's winter outside!

Correctly-installed shutters are also a great way to prevent energy loss. Shutters are both durable and functional window treatments that - when fitted close to the window frame - act as a great barrier to the chilly weather outside. You can use them on their own, or combine them with curtains to achieve even more insulation.

The great thing about shutters is they can be customised to fit different openings, such as skylights. Our hinged shutters are available exclusively through our free in-home consultation service.

Invest in blinds for efficiency and style

Blinds are another excellent window treatment choice for winter, as they're energy efficient and stylish.

Readymade roman blinds fit most windows and can be easily folded up when not in use. We can also install custom-made roman blinds with thermal or blockout fabric that enhances thermal performance.

Our range of winter window treatments will be sure to keep heat inside your home this winter. For more winter furnishing tips and tricks, check out the slideshare below!
