How do thermal curtains work?

A surprising amount of the warmth your house builds up during the day can be lost through your windows. However, a set of quality curtains can help to offset this by creating a seal between the fabric and the window pane. To enhance the insulative properties of regular curtains, an acrylic coating is applied to the back of the fabric before being heat-sealed in place.

According to Energywise, good curtains can cut heat loss by up to 50 per cent for double-glazed windows, and 60 per cent for single-glazed windows.

The effectiveness of your curtains will depend on how well your drapes are installed. The majority of heat transfer happens due to air gaps along the wall, explains Kiwi architect Keith Huntington. Rather than trying to escape through the insulative fabric of thermal curtains, air will travel through gaps around the edges of the curtains.

To reduce the rate of heat loss, curtains should overlap the edges of the window as well as being long enough to touch the ground. This seals in the cold air from around the window, preventing it from escaping into the room.
