Styling with cushions - how to combine trends and comfort

Styling with cushions - how to combine trends and comfort

We all love a good cushion, don't we? Whether lying on our couch reading a good book on the weekend or sitting at our desk doing work, cushions often provide that source of comfort we are looking for.

However, cushions can be more than something that we sit or lie on - they're a design feature. As one of the many focal points around a room, cushions can accentuate trends, designs and styles, matching with everything from couches to curtains.

Of course, there comes a time when cushions need to be updated to refresh your look and add a touch of luxury. If this sounds familiar, take a look at our guide below on how to style your home with custom-made and ready-made cushions from Harvey Furnishings.

Should I choose custom made or ready made?

One of the first questions that you need to ask yourself is whether you want custom made or ready made cushions. Each option has its benefits and can work within the particular design trends and concepts that you wish to showcase. Let's discuss custom made first.

Custom made cushions

At Harvey Furnishings, you can select the cushion fabric to match your curtains and decor - creating a custom design that is unique to your home. While these are more expensive than their ready made alternatives, you have full control over the size and look of the cushions.

In fact, you also have more creative design features available such as fabric combinations, piped edges and reversible finishes - adding more style to your custom look. Simply contact us to start creating your own custom cushions.

Ready made cushions

Readymade cushions

If you prefer buying off the shelf (or screen, if you're shopping online) for your ready made cushions, we can certainly find the right match for you. Our cushion range is split into three core areas, including:

  1. Filled Cushions - Over 100 different cushion patterns, designs and looks, ready to be placed in your home as soon as you buy. These come with a cushion inner.
  2. Cushion Covers - Looking for a new cover or style for your cushions? Simply replace the existing one with a brand new cover.
  3. Cushion Inners - Available in a number of shapes and sizes, our cushion inners are made of either duck feather (recommended) or polyester.

Interestingly, if you can't decide whether custom made or ready made is best, you could always mix and match textures, colours and patterns between the two. This said, one or two custom statement cushions with plain ready made cushions can also save you money.

Now you have your basic cushion options, we have a number of helpful answers to cushion styling questions. Let's get your comfort on!

  • How many cushions are appropriate for a bed or couch?

Styling with cushions

While this is a personal choice, it could be determined by what style you are looking for in the room. For example, an even number of cushions are best for traditional designs, whereas odd numbers suit more modern or eclectic tastes.

Alternatively, the number of cushions may depend on the size of the furniture. We recommended one cushion for single chairs, five cushions for three-seaters and four cushions for two-seaters as a general point of reference. At the end of the day, there is no hard and fast rule so see what looks best in the space.

How long do cushion inners last?

As mentioned above, we have a range of cushion inners to choose from. These are reusable and high-quality so will last for many years if you treat them with care and clean them properly.

As well as this, if you want to change the look and style of your room, you can simply choose a different fabric or cushion cover and go in another direction.

Why is duck feather better than polyester?

This ties in well from the previous question. Although duck feathers are more expensive compared to polyester, they will continue to be plump and comfortable for longer. With a quality duck feather inner, you can continue to change up your home for years to come.

How important is contrast when styling with cushions?

This is a question that we often get and comes down to what the cushions are for from a stylish perspective. Are they designed to match the curtains or other items around the house? Perhaps you want them to be a standalone element that wows an audience? Whichever it is, contrast is vital across textures, shapes, sizes and even patterns.

How can I present my new cushions?

Once you have your new cushions, you'll definitely want to show it off to friends and family. To do so, we recommend the 'pillow chop' technique which we use in our own photography. A chopped pillow is achieved by fluffing a feather- or down-filled pillow and using a karate chop motion to create an indentation in the top.
